5 secrets to an extraordinary family photo

What makes an extraordinary family photo?

You could ask this question to 100 different people and get 100 different answers. It's hard to explain. You know a great picture when you see one. But what makes them so special?

For us, there are five things that will make YOUR family photos extraordinary.

1) The eyes.

As a family photographer, my main focus is almost always the eyes. They say that your eyes are the window to your soul and having perfect focus on the your eyes is the single most important factor in a great picture.

She loved these leaves! But isn't it the eyes that really draw you in?

2) The smile

Honestly, this can be a big issue when it comes to family photo shoots. Often we have expectations that the best pictures are smiling kids, smiling mum and smiling dad. However, sometimes a more serious face or an inquisitive face can make for an equally stunning image.

She loved that little rabbit! And look at the concentration and focus on her face.

One thing is definitely true. Not smiling at all is 100 times better than a forced smile. These will stand out a mile off and ruin the picture. That's why we don't tell everyone to say "CHEEESE!" or "SMILE!"

That's why we like to walk in the woods, climb trees and hide in bushes - exploring is the perfect place to get natural, real expressions.

3) The background

Whilst you, and your family, are (obviously!) the most important part of a family photo shoot, the background can play a huge part too. But don't worry about this. This is where we, as photographers, come in. We know tonnes of stunning locations in and around Nottingham, Nottinghamshire and Derybshire so we can advise you on the best places to visit at different times of year. Although, if you know somewhere that's beautiful let us know - if the location means something to your family that'll make your session even more special.

4) The time of day

Photographers often talk about something called the golden hour. But what is that? Simply put, this is the time around sunrise and sunset when the light is a beautiful golden colour and when there are long drawn out shadows. It is absolutely the best time to have a photo shoot. Why? Because the light adds this golden haze to the image and is undoubtedly stunning.

5) The experience

 We just love that giggle!

The biggest thing you will remember about your family photo shoot is that it is fun! If you and your family enjoy walks in the country, exploring forests or jumping in puddles, then you're going to

love it!

The more you enjoy the session.

The better your images will be.

Beyond that you'll also treasure the images more because they'll be associated with an enjoyable experience.

Breaking the rules

The best thing about knowing the rules is knowing when to break them isn't it!?

 1) The eyes Yes. Most of the time the focus is on the eyes. However, sometimes it's the other little details that matter more and tell the story of the photo shoot or the family involved. Take for example this shot from a shoot with a recently engaged couple. I just love the connection between the two.

 2) The smiles Natural smiles are the best. No question about it! These ones are especially lovely and natural!

 4) The time of day Yes, golden hour is the best time for photography. However, if we do need to shoot in the middle of the day, that's fine! This shot was taken on a sunny day in early afternoon - if its sunny (great!) and we do have to shoot earlier in the day, we'll find some beautiful  shade - often in forest or woods.
